Columbia Cemetery in Boulder is the burial site of Fredricka Baunn, who died in 1871 from a uterine hemorrhage following an abortion. Dr. Mary Solander, who performed the procedure, was convicted of manslaughter and became the first woman imprisoned in the Colorado state penitentiary.

In 2024, Colorado voters enshrined the right to abortion in the state constitution. A century earlier, a very different story was unfolding — one involving a young woman, a respected female doctor, and a trial that shaped Colorado’s early abortion laws.
